Mars Cars Work – 12/13

Saturday, December 13, 2014
On Saturday, December 13, MARS/WARS held a special build session to work on the MarsCar. During this time, the electrical team completed wiring the receivers that will communicate with the motors and remote control. Additionally, the steering motor was installed on the vehicle during this build session. Adjustments are still necessary to perfect the effectiveness of the vehicle’s steering. The team plans to install lights on the Gator for visual appeal. It is MARS/WARS’s hope to complete the vehicle before Christmas.

Team Meeting – 12/9

Tuesday, December 9 , 2014
MARS/WARS held a regular fall meeting on Tuesday, December 9, as the team attempts to conclude fall projects prior to the holidays. On this evening, the team completed its modifications to the frisbee shooter from the 2014 Phoenix robot. The team continued to work on the safety glass box, the battery cart, pit structure, and MarsCar. During this meeting, students also worked on organizing the team’s storage space so it will be prepared for the 2015 competitive build season.

The local FIRST Lego League team visited Mars/Wars to give a presentation on 3D printing.

Parent Meeting

Monday, December 8, 2014

On Monday, December 8, MARS/WARS conducted a meeting for parents whose students have been accepted to the varsity build team. The meeting entailed details regarding expectations of students, necessary forms, fundraising opportunities & expectations, regional travel plans, as well as opportunities for the parents to help the team.

All students must complete the online STIMS registration process. For students under the age of 18, a parent must grant permission for participation in the 2014 build season. The link to do so should be sent by STIMS via email. Students must also turn in the field trip permission slip as soon as possible.

Members of the varsity build team are expected to do one of the following as the part of a fundraising requirement:

  • Sell 10 LED lightbulbs (see Jordan Reese to pick them up)
  • Participate in a fundraising event in which team members will have a table selling light bulbs at a local vendor  (date to be announced at a later time)

The MARS/WARS varsity build team will participate in two regionals in the spring. The first of these is the Central Illinois Regional which will take place from March 18-21 in the Bradley Renaissance Coliseum. The team will be traveling to Chicago for their second competition, The Midwest Regional, which will take place from April 2-4.

Parents have the opportunity to help MARS/WARS through the coordination of team meals during the varsity build season. The team will have weekdays meals this year (tentative) in addition to Saturday meals. Parents are not expected to pay for the meals, but simply provide the food, and MARS/WARS will reimburse them for their expenses.

Practice Field Working Session

Sunday December 7 , 2014
We had a couple students new to Creo and MeshCAM load up models, make some changes and mill them ! Did some assembly on the new swerve drive.
We had the Phoenix and the new frisbee bot on the field, fine tuning them. We ran the Phoenix in its autonomous using the NAVI gyro board to rotate and run in a square. The frisbee shooter bot now has a one button operation to fire a set of 3 frisbees. We also had some Frisball going on with a goal to get the frisbee to shoot the ball out of the air or the ball to smack the frisbee in the air.
